Libraries Home
The Health Sciences Libraries are members of several document delivery networks, both domestic and international, and have the capability of providing journal articles and books not owned by the University.

Submitting Requests: Interlibrary Loan requests must be submitted to your primary library. Requests may be submitted on either a paper or electronic form.

Before submitting requests please search Franklin, the online catalog, to see if items are held at Penn.

Rush Requests: For patient care emergencies, we will obtain journal articles within 24-48 hours. Consult your primary library for information on fees.

Book Requests: We will not borrow a book owned by the Library unless it is lost or pages are missing from our copy, and book requests cannot be rushed. If a book is checked out to someone else, you must make arrangements with Circulation to recall it. Please check the shelf at least twice over a three-day period before filling out an Interlibrary Loan request form for an owned title.

For those books not owned by the Penn Libraries and those that are declared missing or lost, we will obtain them through regular interlibrary channels. One exception: we will obtain books owned by the Dental and Vet libraries through interlibrary loan as a convenience for our patrons. However, if a book is checked out to someone else, you must make arrangements with Circulation to recall it. If you think a book is lost, please fill out a missing item slip at the Circulation Desk.

Journal Requests: If your document request is the result of a literature search using the MEDLINE or CINAHL/Nursing databases (in any system), please write the unique identifier number given at the top of the citation (AN or UI field) on the request form at "Unique Identifier #." This information will speed the document delivery process. Please check the shelf at least twice over a three-day period before filling out an Interlibrary Loan request form for an owned title. Please put a note on your request if you think the item is lost.
