Biomedical LibraryThe Biomedical Library can obtain books and copies of journal articles not owned by the University Library System. In almost all cases, this service is FREE for staff, faculty, and students of the University of Pennsylvania. As a courtesy, Biomedical Library staff will retrieve items from the Veterinary and Dental Library collections, but not from other University of Pennsylvania libraries.
The Biomedical Library Document Delivery Service may be used by the:
- Medical School
- Nursing School
- Biomedical Graduate Studies students, faculty and staff
- Biology graduate students, faculty and staff
- Biomedical Library staff
- Staff of HUP, CHOP, and Presbyterian Hospital.
Interlibrary loan service is limited to patrons with a PennKey.
Document and Book requests may be submitted by filling out the Article Requests form for article requests or the Book Request form on our web site.Rush Requests:
We will obtain RUSH journal articles within 24-48 hours. We charge $10.00 per RUSH item and will handle up to three RUSH requests per individual in one day. RUSH requests must be made in person at the Document Delivery office. Payment must be received in advance.Book Requests:

We will not borrow a book owned by the Library unless it is lost or pages are missing from our copy. If a book is checked out to someone else, use the recall button on the Franklin record to recall it.
We will borrow books not owned by the Penn Libraries for our users. If a Penn book is lost or missing please note that on your form.
If your document request is the result of a literature search using the MEDLINE or CINAHL/Nursing databases, please write the unique identifier number given at the top of the citation (AN or UI field) on the request form. This information will speed the document delivery process. Please check Penn's holdings in Franklin before submitting your request.Article Delivery / Book Pick-Ups:

We will post the articles you request on the web for you and notify you by e-mail when they are available. Articles also can be held at the Biomedical Library Circulation Desk, or can be mailed to your address using intramural or first class mail.
You may pick up books up at the Biomedical Library Circulation Desk. You will be notified when requested books have arrived.
For persons not part of the Penn community, Penn Loansome Doc is a fee-based service for photocopying articles from journals held in the Biomedical Library. The service is currently restricted to journals indexed by MEDLINE. Document requests must be submitted using the National Library of Medicine's Loansome Doc software. See our Penn Loansome Doc web site for details. (Note: Penn community persons may also use this service if they wish, but it is a fee-based service, unlike the other services listed above.)Questions?:
